The Only Packing List You Need for a Sports Trip

February 7, 2026

You're going to a game, not moving across the country. Yet somehow, every group has that one person who shows up to the airport with a checked bag for a two-night trip.

Don't be that person. Here's the no-nonsense packing list for a sports trip weekend that fits in a carry-on.

The Carry-On Strategy

A sports trip is typically 2-3 nights. You need one bag -- a backpack or small roller. That's it. If you can't fit everything for a weekend trip in a carry-on, you're overthinking it.

Why carry-on only?

The Essentials

Clothing

Cold weather game? Add thermals, a beanie, and gloves. Layer up -- stadiums are brutal in November through February. Hand warmers are a game-changer for outdoor stadiums.

Warm weather game? Swap the jacket for sunscreen and sunglasses. Outdoor stadiums in the sun will cook you.

Toiletries (TSA-Friendly)

Keep it minimal. Most hotels have shampoo, soap, and a hair dryer.

Tech

That's it. You don't need a laptop, a tablet, or a camera. Your phone handles everything.

Game Day Bag

On game day, you don't want to carry your full backpack into the stadium. Most stadiums have strict bag policies. Here's what you need:

Leave everything else at the hotel.

What NOT to Pack

Packing by Trip Type

Flying to the Game (Carry-On Only)

Roll your clothes instead of folding -- it saves space and reduces wrinkles. Put your game jersey on top for easy access. Wear your bulkiest shoes on the plane.

Bag: 22" roller or a 40L backpack.

Driving to the Game

You have more flexibility. Throw a cooler in the trunk for tailgating. Bring folding chairs if you're tailgating. But resist the urge to overpack just because you have trunk space -- you still don't need five outfit options.

Bonus items for road trips:

Cold Weather Games (Outdoor Stadiums)

Layer system:

  1. Base layer: Thermal top and bottom
  2. Mid layer: Fleece or hoodie
  3. Outer layer: Wind-resistant jacket
  4. Accessories: Beanie, gloves, hand warmers, wool socks

Sitting in 20-degree weather for 3+ hours is no joke. Overdress -- you can always take layers off.

The 5-Minute Pack

If you're a last-minute packer, here's the speed run:

  1. Grab your jersey and one going-out shirt
  2. Throw in 2 pairs of jeans (wear one, pack one)
  3. Underwear and socks for each day
  4. Toiletry bag (should always be pre-packed)
  5. Phone charger and portable battery
  6. Jacket
  7. Done

You're going to a sports game with your friends. The bar for looking good is low, the bar for having fun is high. Pack light, travel easy, and focus on the experience.
